First confirm whether the report is complete

Seeing HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs, HBeAg, or HBV DNA on a report can feel frightening. The first step is not to diagnose yourself from one line. Check the sample date, reference ranges, units, and whether the report includes the full HBV blood test pattern.

A single positive or negative marker often does not explain the whole situation. Clinicians usually interpret HBV serology together with HBV DNA, ALT/AST, symptoms, previous records, vaccination history, family history, and possible exposure timing.

Prepare for a qualified medical visit

Bring the original report or a clear photo. If you have older test results, vaccine records, pregnancy information, immune-suppression plans, or current medicines, bring those too. Ask whether you need repeat HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, HBeAg/anti-HBe, HBV DNA, liver tests, ultrasound, or fibrosis assessment.

Do not start, stop, or change antiviral medicines by yourself. If you already take HBV medicine, tell the clinician about missed doses, cost pressure, side effects, supplements, alcohol, and other medicines.

How to talk with family and partners

Household and sexual partners may need HBV screening and vaccine advice, but everyday contact is not the main risk. Eating together, hugging, shaking hands, and using the same toilet do not require isolation. The practical focus is blood exposure, sexual exposure, birth-related prevention for babies, and vaccine protection for people who are not immune.

Action checklist

Save every report with the date and laboratory name. Write down possible exposure timing, symptoms, medicines, pregnancy plans, and family history. Ask a clinician what infection status you may be in, what tests should be repeated, and when to return. Encourage partners and household members to check HBV status and vaccination. Avoid alcohol while you are sorting out your liver status, and do not use internet advice as a treatment plan.
